I have always admired artists - performance artists, visual artists, writers, athletes, mostly because I have always found art to be so difficult. I have longed for a creative talent for as long as I can remember. As a young girl, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to try dance, piano and clarinet. No talent there. I remember dreading the required art class in junior high school and the numerous projects that all turned out so badly it was embarrassing. I also remember dreading the required music class where I had to sing in the chorus and the feeling of terror that the teacher might call on me to sing alone. In high school, I sat on the field hockey and lacrosse benches, and I only had that opportunity because everyone made the team. As an adult, I paid an art student who lives down the street to try and teach me to draw; her flier said that she could teach anyone to draw. Well, she can't. And for many years, I had given up on the idea of ever feeling successful at anything creative.
And then, my younger son starts a business where he reads original short stories written by children and sets them to music. And some of these stories are really good. And I say to myself, I want to try and write short stories. So, I call my younger son and tell him that I want to write short stories, read them myself and set them to music. Then I ask if he'll help me. Of course, I'll help you, he answers. But what do I write about, I continue. Start with what you know, he tells me. So, I decide to write about the most memorable moments of my life.
Finally, after a lifetime of failure, I feel good about my art. I love writing, reading and choosing the music for my stories (editing them, not so much). And with the encouragement of my family and friends, I've decided to share. I hope you will enjoy listening to my stories as much as I enjoy writing them.
Thank you for your interest.
